August 30, 2004 — Summertime

This is absolutely one of the best times of the year for a foodie... our Saturday Greenmarket visit yielded a basked of baby heirloom tomatoes, artisanal bread studded with kalamata olives, bicolor sweet corn, perfect little berries, and more.

Yesterday's dinner was grilled chicken breasts simply marinated in fresh garlic and herbs, with lemon juice and a little olive oil, accompanied with lightly grilled corn on the cob, and a panzanella salad comprised of some of those gorgeous heirloom tomatoes and cubes of grilled kalamata bread, spiked with fresh basil leaves, good olive oil, salt, pepper and red wine vinegar.  Petite strawberries and blueberries topped with lightly sweetened mascarpone were a perfect end to the meal.

August 27, 2004 — Manifesto

"Since the world began, we have gone about our work quietly, resisting the urge to generalize, valuing the individual over the group, the actual over the conceptual, the inherent sweetness of the present moment over the theoretically peaceful future to be obtained via murder. Many of us have trouble sleeping and lie awake at night, worrying about something catastrophic befalling someone we love. We rise in the morning with no plans to convert anyone via beating, humiliation, or invasion. To tell the truth, we are tired. We work. We would just like some peace and quiet."

I've loved all the little Olympics themes on Google, but I love this one in particular:

Those Who Knew Me When will know why.

Williamsburgh Cafe

Williamsburgh Cafe
170 Wythe Ave. (Williamsburg/Greenpoint)
at N. 7th St.
718-387-5855

Just a few short blocks from the bustle of Bedford Ave. sits Williamsburgh Cafe. This somewhat hidden gem is absolutely worth seeking out. The space is large, and manages to be both warm and airy, with exposed brick and wood, and large french doors which can be opened out onto the street. There's outdoor seating as well - a perfect vantage point for peoplewatching.
