December 25, 2005 — Merry Christmas
It's been sort of an odd week... between the transit strike, friends dealing with bad news, bad luck, bad things... presents not getting to where they should in time for the holiday... it has been difficult to feel any sort of holiday spirit. I didn't put up any decorations this year, we didn't even get a tree until I picked up this one Friday after work, thanks to the little voice inside me saying "NO. You will have a good Christmas, dammit, despite it all."
And sorta like magic, it is happening. Sitting on the sofa with Mike and the cats last night, listening to 37 different versions of "O Holy Night" and giggling about our tiny little tree... waking up this morning, exchanging few but well-chosen presents (Julia Child! First Edition!), watching the cats tear around the apartment chasing after their new mousies, and then the topper, this news... I feel warm and content and filled with something that feels surprisingly like Christmas spirit. The thoughts of all the things I didn't get done but wanted to are gone. I'm in the moment and that's a pretty damn great place to be.
