April 24, 2006 Weekend Wrap
We had a rather full weekend, food-and-drink-wise, beginning with dinner at Dressler, a venue so young it still has that new-bar smell. Dressler is not, in fact, a bar, though it has a stunning bar area up front (with an equally stunning bar menu). No, this place is a very grown-up feeling restaurant, one serving beautifully fresh, seasonal ingredients prepared in simple yet elegant fashion.
Everything about our experience there was great - from our pre-dinner cocktails (they have Junipero!), to our appetizers of duck confit rillettes and spring pea raviolini, to our entrees (juicy roasted chicken with ramps, fiddleheads and wild mushrooms for him; wild striped bass with swiss chard, smokey bacon and cockles for me). I think Dressler is a nice addition to the Williamsburg dining scene, and we will definitely be back.
We awoke to heavy rains on Saturday, so we didn't get any planting done in our garden as we had hoped. We lazed around the apartment with the cats, sleeping late, enjoying a rare bacon & eggs breakfast at home, then we headed out for the long bus trip to Red Hook. We stopped off at A Cook's Companion on the way and picked up a few new items for the kitchen, then continued down to the end of the B61's route. We were WAY early for Gary Regan's demo and book signing (which Mike details here), so we walked over to Liberty Heights Tap Room to cool our heels over a small pizza and a couple of beers.
After the signing we decided to skip having dinner in Red Hook and just head home - it was cold and wet still, and we were just ready to settle in for the night. I whipped up a quick dinner of gnocchi with wild mushroom sauce, and we turned in fairly early for a very good night's sleep.
Sunday brought more rain, but we had no plans other than to hang out at home, wait for our grocery delivery and play with Pastis, so that's just what we did. Mike made us french toast and chicken-apple sausage, we drank our coffee and just relaxed for the remainder of the day with some reading materials and Muppet Show DVDs.
We've got a short but busy week ahead, as we'll be headed to Birmingham for Jeff & Quin's wedding which is THIS!SATURDAY!
When we get back, it will be May. Where has the year gone?
