April 27, 2007 — little bites

Lots going on that I'd like to be writing about, but my time and energy are very limited, so instead, you get links.

If you haven't yet read Michael Pollan's recent piece on the Farm Bill in the Times, please do so. You're not a farmer? Doesn't matter. Pollan explains in crystal clear fashion why this legislation is something we should ALL care about.

More fallout from the Menu Foods fiasco - it appears that some hog farms received discarded tainted pet food and fed it to their animals, which means that it may now be in our food supply. It's all connected, people. Know where the food you're eating comes from.

I'll end with the good stuff. I ordered our new grill today, along with a cover, a new chimney starter, and a grill light/fan contraption. Hopefully by the time it all arrives the monsoons will have passed.

Mike has been dry-ageing two beautiful grass-fed Angus delmonicos from Elk Trails for the last few days. Among the nice gifts I got from my attorneys this week for what we old-timers still call "Secretaries' Day" was a bottle of Pierre Peters Brut Millesime, which we're gonna have with oysters before the steak. And I'll pick up a nice bottle of red to go with the steak using one of the gift cards I got. The word "splurge" comes to mind, but I think we've earned it. I'm so looking forward to settling in at home tonight and having some good food and drink with my sweetie.

I haven't yet finished my planting, but already there are tiny green shoots poking up in the garden. They make me feel hopeful.

April 23, 2007 — driving me nuts

There was a restaurant on the corner of Kercheval and (I think) Notre Dame in Grosse Pointe Park, back in the early 1990s, that I used to love. Little gourmet market in the front, a gorgeous bar and little tables in the back, and an awesome woman chef in the kitchen. If I remember the story correctly, her husband bought her the space as a gift, and they named it after their son...? I can't remember the name of this place for the life of me, and so far Google is turning up nothing. Anyone?

EDITED TO ADD: I mentioned some additional information in the comments in my reply to Sarah, but I'll post it out here, as well:

It was on the same side of the street as the Kroger on Kercheval was, and it may have even been opposite it on that same side. I remember there was a meter parking lot behind it where I used to park my car. I know there was an Express store nearby, too, but I forget if it was on the corner directly across the street or at the opposite end of the same block... so maybe I'm misremembering Kercheval and St. Clair or Neff as Kercheval and Notre Dame. It was definitely close to Cadieux, though.

The restaurant was only open for a year or two, sadly... my ex-husband and I used to go there often before we were married, and I went there alone for breakfast many times. They actually had a Beaujolais Nouveau uncorking party we went to that started VERY late on a school night, that was an absolute blast... that was the very first time I tried conch (which was used in delicious fritters). The breakfast menu featured great pancakes, and great wholegrain toast with peanut butter and honey, and one of my favorite things on the dinner menu, which I'm hoping to recreate soon, was a pasta dish with salmon and a light lemon cream sauce.
