April 27, 2007 little bites

Lots going on that I'd like to be writing about, but my time and energy are very limited, so instead, you get links.

If you haven't yet read Michael Pollan's recent piece on the Farm Bill in the Times, please do so. You're not a farmer? Doesn't matter. Pollan explains in crystal clear fashion why this legislation is something we should ALL care about.

More fallout from the Menu Foods fiasco - it appears that some hog farms received discarded tainted pet food and fed it to their animals, which means that it may now be in our food supply. It's all connected, people. Know where the food you're eating comes from.

I'll end with the good stuff. I ordered our new grill today, along with a cover, a new chimney starter, and a grill light/fan contraption. Hopefully by the time it all arrives the monsoons will have passed.

Mike has been dry-ageing two beautiful grass-fed Angus delmonicos from Elk Trails for the last few days. Among the nice gifts I got from my attorneys this week for what we old-timers still call "Secretaries' Day" was a bottle of Pierre Peters Brut Millesime, which we're gonna have with oysters before the steak. And I'll pick up a nice bottle of red to go with the steak using one of the gift cards I got. The word "splurge" comes to mind, but I think we've earned it. I'm so looking forward to settling in at home tonight and having some good food and drink with my sweetie.

I haven't yet finished my planting, but already there are tiny green shoots poking up in the garden. They make me feel hopeful.

i totally forgot, i have a grill too! i can never get organized enough to BBQ early in the day, and always end up having to bring a lamp outside to see what i'm doing. that light/fan thing sounds like a good idea.

This gets worse and worse as the days wear on, doesn't it? I so wish human beings were better creatures. We're shameful. I am embarrassed for us, quite honestly.
